Art as Spiritual Perception
Edited by James Romaine, 15 essays in art history, art theory and art philosophy, written by friends and colleagues of Professor E. John Walford. A Festschrift, offered at Walford's retirement from the art department at Wheaton College, Wheaton Illinois, in 2012. The essays, of remarkably broad interest, concern problems in Western art from Roman times to the end of the twentieth century. The writers are all in various ways related to the work and/or teaching of Professor Hans Rookmaaker, founder of the art department of the Vrije Universiteit at Amsterdam. Rookmaaker proposed a Calvinistic Christian view to art and history. John Walford was his student in the early nineteen seventies, before moving to Cambridge and obtaining his Ph.D. with a thesis on Jacob van Ruisdael.
